Hardwood vs. LVP: What Holds Up in the Lowcountry

June 14, 2026 · Falcon Building Group

Hardwood or LVP comes up in nearly every Lowcountry remodel we plan. Either one can be the right answer, depending on the house and how you live in it.

Moisture and humidity

LVP wins outright. It's waterproof and dimensionally stable; coastal humidity is irrelevant to it. Engineered hardwood handles our climate well with proper acclimation and installation; solid hardwood demands the most care. If the room in question is a laundry, mudroom, or beach-towel highway, LVP is the safer floor and the one we'd recommend.

Look and feel

Real wood wins, still. Premium LVP has gotten remarkably convincing at viewing distance, but underfoot and up close, genuine hardwood has warmth, sound, and character vinyl doesn't fully match. Wood can also be refinished decades from now; LVP gets replaced.

Durability and daily life

It depends on your household. LVP shrugs at dogs' claws, grandkids' juice, and sand from the beach. Hardwood scratches and dents, which some owners call damage and others call patina. Be honest about which owner you are.

Resale value

Real hardwood still carries prestige in listings, and in higher-end homes buyers notice. But quality LVP has shed its stigma. In most Lowcountry price ranges, well-chosen LVP reads as a feature rather than a compromise.

Cost

Quality LVP generally runs meaningfully less than engineered or solid hardwood, installed. (Beware bargain-bin LVP, because thin wear layers age fast. Stick to mid-grade and up.)

Our rule

Main living areas in a home you love long-term: engineered hardwood is a beautiful, climate-smart choice. Busy households, rentals, single-level slabs, or moisture-adjacent rooms: quality LVP, no apology needed. Many of our projects use both: wood in the living areas, LVP where it gets wet or messy.
