This is the roofing question in the Lowcountry, and the answer is that both materials are legitimate. Installed correctly, both meet coastal code and protect your home. The differences are cost, lifespan, and what you value.
Up-front cost
Architectural shingles win, clearly. A standing-seam metal roof typically costs two to three times as much installed. For many budgets, that settles it, and there's no shame in that answer.
Lifespan and cost-per-year
Metal wins over time. Coastal shingle roofs realistically deliver 15 to 22 years (here's why); quality standing-seam metal delivers 40 to 50+. Do the division and metal's cost per year of service is often lower, if you'll own the home long enough to collect.
Wind and storm performance
Metal wins by a real margin. Standing-seam panels with concealed fasteners are engineered for the wind speeds coastal SC codes contemplate, and there are no individual shingles to peel off at the edges. Shingle systems installed to coastal spec (correct nailing, sealed edges, quality underlayment) perform respectably. Installation quality matters more than brand.
Salt air and maintenance
Metal with proper coastal coatings shrugs off salt air; shingles age faster in it. Metal also sheds pine straw and debris that shingle roofs collect.
Looks
This one is a matter of taste. Metal suits the classic Lowcountry cottage look; architectural shingles suit traditional neighborhoods. Many communities' ARBs weigh in, and we handle that.
Our rule of thumb
Anyone staying 15+ years or building a forever home should give metal a hard look. If you're likely to move within a decade, or working to a firm budget, coastal-spec architectural shingles are the rational buy.
We install both. See roofing, the Cost & Investment Guide, and if you're in Ridgeland or nearby, request a consultation. The Cost & Budget FAQ explains how we quote.
