Every family's space problem feels unique, but most of them get solved by one of the same five additions.
1. The first-floor primary suite
This is the Lowcountry's most-requested addition by a wide margin. Retirees and soon-to-be retirees want bedroom, bath, and closet on one level, with no stairs now or later. Done well, it includes a walk-in (often curbless) shower and generous natural light. It's also among the best resale investments in our market, where one-level living is prized.
2. The sunroom or four-seasons room
Lowcountry light is a natural resource, and a glass-walled room aimed at the yard, the lagoon, or the marsh becomes the most-used room in the house within a week. The four-seasons version is insulated, conditioned, and built on a proper foundation, so it works as true living space year-round.
3. The in-law suite
Multigenerational living is growing fast here: aging parents relocating near family, or adult kids landing back home. A proper in-law suite, with a bedroom, full bath, sitting area, and sometimes a kitchenette, gives everyone privacy and keeps family close. Placement and separate entrances take real design thought.
4. The screened porch
It isn't glamorous, but people love theirs. In a climate where evening air is glorious and insects are ambitious, a generous screened porch is the Lowcountry's answer to the family room.
5. The garage-plus
A larger or additional garage with real storage, or with a bonus room above it, solves the storage problem that Lowcountry slab-built homes (no basements here) all share.
Whatever you're adding, the standard is the same: it should look like it was always there. That takes careful planning. See our home additions page, budget with the Cost & Investment Guide, and if you're in Hardeeville or nearby, request a consultation. The Process & Timeline FAQ covers living at home during construction.
