Tile is semi-permanent. You'll live with the choice for 20+ years, so the trend question really means: what's popular and will still look right in 2040? Here's our read after a great many kitchens and baths.
Trends with staying power
Handmade-look and zellige tile. The tiles are slightly irregular and the glaze varies a little, so light moves across the surface. It suits Lowcountry homes because it looks handmade, and handmade doesn't go out of style.
Warm neutrals over stark white. Ivory, sand, oyster, soft greens. The all-white bathroom is giving way to warmth, which happens to be exactly the palette this region has always worn well.
Large-format tile in showers and floors. That means fewer grout lines, calmer surfaces, and easier cleaning. The caveat: large tile is unforgiving of substrate prep. The surface under it has to be flat, which is where proper installation earns its keep.
Wood-look porcelain planks. You get the warmth of real wood in a material that doesn't mind water. In wet rooms that's the best of both. There's more in choosing tile for wet areas.
Trends we'd gently question
Heavily patterned encaustic-style floors photograph beautifully and tire quickly. If you love the look, use it in a powder room, where a bold floor fits. And ultra-trendy grout colors (we see you, jet-black grout on white subway) can date a room to the exact year it was built.
What we'd advise
Put trend-proof choices on the big surfaces and personality in the things you can swap: paint, hardware, lighting. Your backsplash shouldn't have to carry the fashion risk.
When tile is part of a kitchen remodel, budget with the Cost & Investment Guide, and if you're in Okatie or nearby, request a consultation. The Getting Started FAQ covers what happens next.
