Concrete or pavers is the question everyone asks first. In Lowcountry soil, the question of what goes under either one matters more.
Cost
Concrete wins up front. A quality concrete driveway typically runs meaningfully less than pavers over the same footprint. For long rural drives, common around Ridgeland, that difference multiplies fast, which is why concrete (or concrete ribbons) dominates there.
Our soil, the deciding factor
Coastal South Carolina sits on sandy, moisture-swinging soil that moves. Concrete responds to movement the only way a rigid slab can: it cracks. Good installation manages this with proper thickness, reinforcement, and control joints that give the inevitable cracks a place to go.
Pavers respond differently: as hundreds of independent units on a flexible base, they ride minor movement without cracking. If something does settle, that section lifts out and relays invisibly. Nobody has ever repaired concrete invisibly.
Longevity and repairs
Both last decades when the base is right: compacted, graded, properly drained. That base work is 80% of the outcome for either material, and it's exactly what cut-rate installers cut. Paver repairs are invisible; concrete repairs always show.
Curb appeal
Pavers, generally. They offer patterns, borders, and tones that concrete can't match, and in higher-end neighborhoods they read as the premium choice. Stamped or broom-finished concrete done well is clean and handsome, too. (Some community ARBs have opinions; we handle those approvals.)
The rule of thumb
Firm budget or long drive: quality concrete, correctly jointed. Prioritizing looks, invisible repairability, and soil-movement tolerance: pavers earn their premium. Either way, hire on the quality of the base work.
