How Long Does a Driveway Installation Take?

May 26, 2026 · Falcon Building Group

A driveway installation has two timelines: how long the work takes, and how long until you can actually use it. Contractors love quoting the first and mumbling the second. Here's both.

The work itself: 3 to 7 working days

  • Day 1: Demolition and removal. The old driveway comes out and gets hauled off. It's loud, dusty, and satisfying.
  • Days 2 to 3: Base preparation. Excavation to depth, grading for drainage, stone base placed and compacted in lifts. These are the unglamorous days that decide whether your driveway is still flat in ten years. This is the part we refuse to rush, as we explain in concrete vs. pavers.
  • Days 3 to 4 (concrete): Forming and pouring. Forms, reinforcement, pour, finish, and control joints, usually in a single pour day once formed.
  • Days 3 to 7 (pavers): Laying. Bedding sand, laying the field and borders, cutting edges, edge restraints, and joint sand compaction.

Weather sets this schedule. Concrete has temperature and rain requirements, and a wet week pushes everything back. We'd rather slip three days than pour into a storm.

The waiting: concrete's fine print

Concrete cures on its own schedule, whatever yours is. Walking: 24 to 48 hours. Regular vehicles: 7 days. Heavy vehicles (RVs, trucks, moving vans): 28 days for full strength. Parking early is the most common way homeowners crack their own new driveway in week one.

Pavers' quiet advantage: no cure time. Compacted and sanded, they're drivable immediately.

Planning around it

Line up street parking or a neighbor's grace for the week, schedule deliveries around the pour, and hold off the moving truck for a month. We put your exact use-dates in writing. See our driveways page and the Cost & Investment Guide for budgeting.
